Gauge: 14 dc - 9 rows in 4''/10 cm
Techniques: Single Crochet (sc), Half double corchet (hdc), Double crochet (dc), Slip Stitch (sl st)
-Chain 5, join with sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, 10 sc in ring, join with sl st on top of ch.
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc. Join. Total: 20 sc.
Round 3: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, 2 dc in next sc, *1 dc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc*. Repeat **. Join. Tot. 30 dc.
Round 4: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, 1 dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next 2 dc*. Repeat **. Join. Tot 40 dc

I have a friend and co-worker who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has surgery Monday and then some long weeks of chemo. I was looking for a nice hat that I could make her in case she has hair loss, but since it's summer, I didn't want a "chemo" cap. Not pretty. Then I found THIS on Rav! Perfect! I have some Lily Sugar N' Cream in variegated summer colors that I think will be very pretty. Thanks for a great pattern!

ReplyDeleteI could do with a bit of help, though because I tried to make it last week and it ended up looking like a floppy beret (I gave up before the brim because it was so floppy) and nothing like your beautiful hat! I am a beginner crocheter - can anyone explain what I did wrong? Does it have something to do with the yarn I used? Couldn't get Phildar White Cotton, so used Patons 100% white DK cotton. I was using a 4mm crochet hook. Help!

Dear Kate, you have 2 options: 1) switch to a thinner yarn (I used a US F5/ 3.75 mm crochet hook)
ReplyDelete2) adapt the pattern to your thicher yarn. Witch is more difficult. Try to make a 10x10'' square and compare it to mine:14 dc - 9 rows in 4''/10 cm

Dear Linda from row 7 to hdc row you have 70 sts. Then you start the brim. I hope this helps!

What does it mean "worked double?"--used 2 strands of yarn as one? Link where I saw pattern said yarn is fine, #2 in weight category. Cannot find that anywhere. If I use worsted cotton, medium, such as Lily's Sugar and Cream, would I still use 2 strands at once, and how would that yarn work for this pattern? Am new crocheter--sorry. Thank you.

Thank you for answering my question about having 104 sts as opposed to 98. I thought I should skip a dc since I was doing a ch 1 but as a "newbie" am literal with directions, and didn't see anything there about skipping a st. My inexperience shows doesn't it? This hat is adorable and will have to stock up on cotton yarn--every female in my family will want one now. Thank you again for taking time to answer my question.

Also, I find it difficult dealing wit2 strands of #4 cotton with a 3.75 needle - keeps slipping off or getting stuck.

Dear Jen, you don't HAVE TO use two strands, I did because I had some leftover cotton that was too thin to be worked single. So i doubled it. You can use une single strand if you have a medium weight cotton yarn :)

Dear Lizann, when you start you make a chain and then a double chain in the same st. Then you alternate two double chains in one stitch to 1 double chain in the next two sts, as written:

I love this hat, and crochet a lot, but I'm finding that mine doesn't look as "holey" as yours. I'm using the same cotton exactly as you and a 4.0 mm hook.....Can you give me a guage based on what it should measure after 4 or 5 rounds? Do you crochet this loosely? I usually am on the loose side but this is just not working....ARGH!!!!!

ReplyDeleteI am making this hat now and read all the comments before buying yarn. I bought Bernat Handicrafter a huge skein for about 10 bucks...will make many hats 4 ply cotton candy collection. It is worsted weight #4 on the pkg. My idea was to not have to use double strands. I am new to crocheting and using 2 strands confuses me. I used a US G/4.00mm hook and it is working out perfectly. Tried it on, the size is great! The yarn is easy to use...love the hat so far. I made a cream hat and just finished the contrast row 16 in a pink/white stripe...loving it! Will finish the brim in cream. Think I will make a large crochet flower in the contrast for a little additional summery decor. I am making this for my sister who is going on a cruise. Thank you for such an awesome pattern...I will be making more.

I am confused if you are doing groups of 5 dcs how do you end up with 98 which is not a number that is a group of 5. ReplyDeleteLove this pattern. I used worsted weight yarn (single not doubled) and an H hook. It ended up a bit larger than yours I think, but it worked for me as I have a large head and thick hair. I did have to leave out a row or two so it didn't completely cover my face. Thank you!

I have two stitches left over - it is more than 40 stitches on row 4 - I frogged it and tried three more times - these instructions are BULLSHIT!! You don't have pictures of the top of the hat - and if you cant make instructions that people can understand - THEN DONT DO THEM! I DONT THINK THE OTHERS HAVE EVEN ATTEMPTED TO MAKE THE HAT BEFORE THEY RAVED ABOUT IT. I take it back - I only saw one.
