  21. I have a friend and co-worker who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has surgery Monday and then some long weeks of chemo. I was looking for a nice hat that I could make her in case she has hair loss, but since it's summer, I didn't want a "chemo" cap. Not pretty. Then I found THIS on Rav! Perfect! I have some Lily Sugar N' Cream in variegated summer colors that I think will be very pretty. Thanks for a great pattern!

  23. I really like your hat pattern. I'm just making a plain summer hat and your brim is much more interesting than the one in my pattern, so I'll definitely be adopting it. :)

  24. Hello! I found this hat on an internet search for "summer hats to crochet". It's looks fantastic!

I could do with a bit of help, though because I tried to make it last week and it ended up looking like a floppy beret (I gave up before the brim because it was so floppy) and nothing like your beautiful hat! I am a beginner crocheter - can anyone explain what I did wrong? Does it have something to do with the yarn I used? Couldn't get Phildar White Cotton, so used Patons 100% white DK cotton. I was using a 4mm crochet hook. Help!

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Dear Kate, you have 2 options: 1) switch to a thinner yarn (I used a US F5/ 3.75 mm crochet hook)

    2) adapt the pattern to your thicher yarn. Witch is more difficult. Try to make a 10x10'' square and compare it to mine:14 dc - 9 rows in 4''/10 cm

    Enjoy!!

  26. Hi PippaW!

Thanks for your help. :) I worked out what I was doing wrong (I feel so daft): I didn't read the bit where you said "worked double". Oops! Gave the hat another shot and it worked up beautifully! 29. I need help, I am 73, learning to crochet, this is my first project. I do fine until I get to the row after the hdc row. Maybe I messed up before. How many st need to be in the rows from 8 on? Can someone send me the st count on all the rows that are not marked. I know what * means, but what does ** mean? I am a self teacher and have no one to ask. Thank you

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi Patsy, sorry for answering late. After row 8 you go on with a stitch in each st (70), no more increasing!

Repeat ** means, repeat from * to *.

What does it mean "worked double?"--used 2 strands of yarn as one? Link where I saw pattern said yarn is fine, #2 in weight category. Cannot find that anywhere. If I use worsted cotton, medium, such as Lily's Sugar and Cream, would I still use 2 strands at once, and how would that yarn work for this pattern? Am new crocheter--sorry. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Anonymous6:43 PM

At the end of row 16 there are still 70 sts. After I did row 17 I have 104 sts. I did not count the beginning ch 2 as a stitch, have taken it out and redone it 3 times, keep getting 104 sts.not 98. What am I doing wrong? Sure hope someone can help me, I really can't go on.

-What does it mean "worked double?"--used 2 strands of yarn as one?
--> Yes I used two strands ad one

At the end of row 16 there are still 70 sts. After I did row 17 I have 104 sts. not 98.
---> Let explain row 17 in another way:

Start with a chain 2 and a dc in same st. Then work two times 1 dc the next 2 dc, and one time 2 dc in next dc, ch 1 and jump a dc for a little hole on the brim. Repeat this: * work 2 dc in next dc, only 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 1, jump a dc for the little hole*. Repeat from * to *. join. Tot 98 sts.

    I hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anonymous11:22 AM

Thank you for answering my question about having 104 sts as opposed to 98. I thought I should skip a dc since I was doing a ch 1 but as a "newbie" am literal with directions, and didn't see anything there about skipping a st. My inexperience shows doesn't it? This hat is adorable and will have to stock up on cotton yarn--every female in my family will want one now. Thank you again for taking time to answer my question.

    ReplyDelete
  47. No problem, actually I should write the skipping st part in a clearer way, you are right! I'm glad you like the hat!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. At the start of each new round, when you say 1dc IN SAME STITCH,which stitch do you mean? The slip stitch we've just used for joining?
I've not started this yet- just reading the pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I mean the st where you just did the chain. I hope this helps :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi there,
Thanks for your fast reply re:"same stitch"problem.
It's not possible to download & print your pattern for the summer hat in its entirety. I can only get the 1st page - the next 2 are blank on my printer.
    Can't do it from rav,either.
    Do you know why?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Dear Jenny I don't know why the printing doesn't work right. You can try selecting all text in the post, copying it into a text edit and print the page. That should work. Happy crocheting!

  52. HI there,
Making your nice hat .WE DO have to use 2 strands of yarn together, don't we?
Why I ask is because mine seems quite big - at Round 11 completed, I feel the crown is big enough9I compared with another hat of mine)
Also, I find it difficult dealing wit2 strands of #4 cotton with a 3.75 needle - keeps slipping off or getting stuck.
    Am I doing something wrong?
I'd be so grateful for a little advice.
Thanks for your blog & pattern.
    Jen

    ReplyDelete
  53. Dear Jen, you don't HAVE TO use two strands, I did because I had some leftover cotton that was too thin to be worked single. So i doubled it. You can use une single strand if you have a medium weight cotton yarn :)
Let me know if it works!
    best

    Justine aka Pippawilson

    ReplyDelete
  54. This is exactly what my husband suggested - & it worked like a charm.
    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I have just finished Round 11 .If I go on to 15,the crown will be much too big -perhaps down to my nose!!
Am I using the right yarn : #4 cotton, used double ?
It feels very hard to manipulate with the 3.75 hook;it keeps slipping off the hook or is hard to get through loops.
    Am I doing something wrong.
Thanks for all your very kind replies to us.

  56. Hi Jenny, this is the yarn I used double:

    100% cotton, 50 gr/ 1 oz 3/4. Crochet hook: metric 4, Uk 8, US F. Knitting needles: metric 3 1/2-4, Uk 9-8, US 4-6. 10cm x 10cm or 4''x4'' square: 19 sts x 28 rows.

    Happy crocheting!

    HELLO:

I AM ON ROW 17 AND FOLLOWING PATTERN BUT END UP WITH ONLY 84ST.
    TRIED 4 TIMES.
MY QUESTION IS WHEN YOU CHAIN ONE ARE YOU ACTUALLY ALSO SKIPPING THE ACTUAL STITCH IR IS THE CHAIN 1 MAKING THE HOLE. VERY CONFUSED !

    THANKS LIZANN

    ReplyDelete
  58. Dear Lizann, when you start you make a chain and then a double chain in the same st. Then you alternate two double chains in one stitch to 1 double chain in the next two sts, as written:

    * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 1, skip 1*.

    I hope this helps!

  65. I love this hat, and crochet a lot, but I'm finding that mine doesn't look as "holey" as yours. I'm using the same cotton exactly as you and a 4.0 mm hook.....Can you give me a guage based on what it should measure after 4 or 5 rounds? Do you crochet this loosely? I usually am on the loose side but this is just not working....ARGH!!!!!

What a lovely hat. Thanks for the pattern. I have only one question if you would be so kind to give me an answer. By "crochet double" do you mean to use two strands of yarn to crocher with. I know this may sound dumb, but like so many, I am also self-taught. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.

I am making this hat now and read all the comments before buying yarn. I bought Bernat Handicrafter a huge skein for about 10 bucks...will make many hats 4 ply cotton candy collection. It is worsted weight #4 on the pkg. My idea was to not have to use double strands. I am new to crocheting and using 2 strands confuses me. I used a US G/4.00mm hook and it is working out perfectly. Tried it on, the size is great! The yarn is easy to use...love the hat so far. I made a cream hat and just finished the contrast row 16 in a pink/white stripe...loving it! Will finish the brim in cream. Think I will make a large crochet flower in the contrast for a little additional summery decor. I am making this for my sister who is going on a cruise. Thank you for such an awesome pattern...I will be making more.

Love this pattern. I used worsted weight yarn (single not doubled) and an H hook. It ended up a bit larger than yours I think, but it worked for me as I have a large head and thick hair. I did have to leave out a row or two so it didn't completely cover my face. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I used Sugar n Cream cotton worsted weight (4) yarn (which is all Michaels has), and the F crochet hook. I tried working double, and it was extremely difficult, so I started again single, and it was much better, but how do I get the brim to stand out?

  90. I am on row 4 - and I have done exactly the way the instructions read. I have two stitches left over - it is more than 40 stitches on row 4 - I frogged it and tried three more times - these instructions are BULLSHIT!! You don't have pictures of the top of the hat - and if you cant make instructions that people can understand - THEN DONT DO THEM! I DONT THINK THE OTHERS HAVE EVEN ATTEMPTED TO MAKE THE HAT BEFORE THEY RAVED ABOUT IT. I take it back - I only saw one.
